All Hails, Jule!
Raise your horns, Citadelians! Join us in welcoming Jule from South Germany to the ranks of the Valkyries of the Citadel. This shield-maiden loves her metalcore and post-hardcore music and she recently sat with your decrepit hosts Chort and Chernoglav to discuss her Metal interests and share a little bit about her. Here’s what she had to say!
Introduce yourself for our readers, Valkyrie
Cheers to everybody! My name is Jule, or @scarlet.misery on Instagram, and I'm from South Germany. Where I live, the metal scene is not very prominent. We have hardly any metal bars or similar venues. I started listening to metal at a young age. In fact, my first metal album was "Hybrid Theory" by Linkin Park, when I was around six years old. Nowadays, I mostly listen to modern metal, metalcore, post-hardcore, and heavy metal. I really love the combination of hard guitar riffs with clean singing. At the moment, my favorite bands are Ice Nine Kills, Mister Misery, and Dust in Mind. I adore the way Ice Nine Kills blends horror themes with metal in every song. Mister Misery also has a touch of horror, and I absolutely love Harley's voice, the lead singer. Dust in Mind amazed me when I saw them live earlier this year. The singer, Jen, has an incredible voice and an impressive vocal range.
Any cool tattoos or piercings you want to highlight?
I have three piercings and four tattoos, but they don't hold any particular meanings, except for one inspired by my favorite books. I'm absolutely obsessed with books!
As a woman in the metal scene, how do you navigate and overcome any challenges or stereotypes you may encounter?
As a woman in the metal scene, I've heard remarks implying that I'm not feminine because I listen to heavy music (ironically, I tend to prefer the softer metal genres). However, I don't care about such comments. Whether people like me or not, I won't change just because someone says something like that.
Tell us about a memorable live metal performance you attended and what made it special for you
I have two memorable live metal performances. First, the concert by Dust in Mind. I wasn't very familiar with the band before, but I instantly fell in love with them. They are so charming and nice, and during the concert, I felt like Jen, the singer, made eye contact with every fan, establishing a connection. On top of that, her live vocals were beautiful. My second memory is similar; it was a Mister Misery concert. The bass player, Alex, enchanted me throughout the entire show with his eerie art. Moreover, the entire band sounded just as amazing live as they do on a recorded CD.
Do you have any female-fronted metal band recommendations?
Some female-fronted metal bands that I highly recommend are Dust in Mind, Enemy Inside, Future Palace, and, of course, Within Temptation. I'm obsessed with collecting metal shirts and jute bags from concerts. In fact, I can't get enough of them!
Best vocalist…aaaand go!
In my opinion, the best male vocalist is Danny Worsnop from Asking Alexandria because I adore his distinctive, raspy voice. As for female singers, Jen from Dust in Mind is my favorite due to her incredible vocal range. I genuinely believe that the albums by Dust in Mind and Mister Misery are highly underrated.
How do you connect with other metalheads and the metal community?
I'm grateful for the opportunity to connect with fellow metalheads and socialize through Instagram.
Are there any local bands that you would recommend for our heathen readers?
I recommend local German bands, such as Any Given Day, Future Palace, and Venues. Give them a listen; you won't regret it.
What's your favourite band shirt?
My favorite band shirt is from Dust in Mind (yes, I really love that band!), and my go-to drink is Coke.
